Peridot: August Birthstone

peridot gems

Peridot is August’s birthstone and one of the world’s most ancient gemstones. It is well-known for its lime colors and its transparency makes it excellent to set in jewelry. It is often associated with abundance because of the green color. The gem is primarily formed in the Earth’s mantle and brought to the surface by volcanic activity.

Peridot Birthstone History

The Ancient Egyptians valued Peridot and called it the “gem of the sun” because they believed it protected those who wore it from terrors at night. The gems were mined on a snake-ridden island in the Red Sea called Topazios, now known as St. John’s Island, and often confused with other green gems like Emerald. Some even believe that Cleopatra’s precious Emerald treasures were actually Peridot.

As time went on people continued to cherish the stone while confusing it for another type of gem. In the Middle Ages the Emeralds set in the Shrine of the Three Kings in the Cologne Cathedral in Germany were actually Peridot.

Today, it is mainly used as a gem in jewelry and other decorative pieces. It is also used in crystal healing and meditation because it is believed to promote emotional balance and has some industrial applications due to its high melting point. Its connection to prosperity and abundance makes it the perfect birthstone for the vibrant green month of August.

Peridot Meaning

Peridot is a variety of the mineral Olivine and symbolizes positive energy with its green color. Individuals who wear the stone are believed to benefit from good health. The gem is cherished for its summer-spirit and ability to instill a sense of calm. These properties make Peridot perfect as a gift for someone with an August birthday.

Gemstone Color

You will always find Peridot in a green hue but there are a range of colors. There is a yellowish-green often called Peridot green. A pure green that often gets confused with Emerald and an olive color that sometimes even appears yellow. The yellowish-green gems are the most valuable and will be the ones that get used in jewelry.
