Fun fact: June is one of only three months that has not just one, but three birthstones: alexandrite, moonstone, and pearl. Each of these has a unique story, aesthetic, and energy, making June a truly special opportunity to celebrate different and new energies and circumstances. And if you’re a gemstone lover or just curious to learn more about the fascinating world of gems, minerals, and fossils, mark your calendar for the Denver Gem Show, happening September 5–14, 2025, where you can see these stones up close.
Alexandrite
Alexandrite was discovered in the 1830s in Russia’s Ural Mountains. The gem is not only rare, but mesmerizing; its signature trait is a dramatic color shift: green in daylight and red in incandescent light, earning it the nickname “emerald by day, ruby by night.” Symbolizing balance, transformation, and creativity, alexandrite is considered a powerful talisman for navigating change or seeking harmony in dualities. And because high-quality alexandrite is extremely scarce, especially in large sizes, it’s become a prized gem among collectors. Lab-grown varieties offer an affordable alternative while still capturing the stone’s signature color magic.
Moonstone
Moonstone has been cherished across time and cultures, from ancient Roman jewelry to Hindu mythology, where it was believed to be solidified moonlight. Its ethereal shimmer, known as adularescence, gives it a dreamy glow akin to the moon at night. The gem is often associated with feminine energy and emotional healing, and is thought to enhance intuition and calm inner chaos and stress. Moonstone pairs beautifully with silver or rose gold, its soft, glowing qualities complementing that of a more metallic stone. In that, it is also a lovely alternative engagement stone for those drawn to nontraditional styles. Moonstone shares its soothing presence with Colorado’s state gem, aquamarine, which is another cool-toned mineral that symbolizes clarity and serenity.
Pearl
Pearls are unique among gemstones because they come from living creatures. Found in both saltwater and freshwater environments, they’re formed when an irritant enters an oyster or mollusk, triggering the creation of nacre, which slowly forms a pearl over time. For centuries, pearls were one of the most sought-after type of gems, treasured by royalty and fashion icons. They symbolize wisdom, integrity, and elegance. Because of pearl farming, these gems are more accessible than ever and can even be found in a variety of shapes and colors, from traditional white to silvery blue, rose, and dramatic black Tahitian pearls.
